Liturgy is the "work" of the Church. As members of Christ's body we gather in community to give praise and thanks to God. In addition, we gather to be penitent and to pray for members of the Church living and dead as well as the entire world. There are a number of opportunities to provide liturgical ministries at Saint James. Eucharistic Ministers (general, homebound, nursing home) This group of adults and high school age or older youth minister the sacramental presence of Jesus at the Eucharist on Sundays and holy days. Eucharistic Ministers are asked to commit to distributing at least one Sunday a month. Lectors This group of adults and high school age or older youth proclaim the Word of God to the assembly on Sundays and holy days. Because this is an awesome endeavor, lectors ought to feel called to this ministry and gifted with skills of proclamation and strong personal faith. Lectors are scheduled approximately once monthly. Liturgical Dance This type of dancing is interpretive movement to spiritual music. It is a form of prayer and praise, which enhances our liturgies. All eighth graders are invited to participate; no prior dance experience is required. This ministry is a witness to the entire parish of our young people's dedication, talents and efforts. Practices take place after school for approximately three or four weeks prior to celebrations. Servers Composed of young men and women in the seventh and eighth grades, servers provide valuable ministry at the Eucharist as well as helping lead the congregation. Serving is an outstanding and fun way for young people to take an active role at Mass. Group training sessions are held in the spring or early summer. Ushers Ushers support the Eucharistic Liturgy by providing hospitality and service to parishioners at Saint James. They fulfill a number of significant roles during Mass. These responsibilities include preparing the worship space and assisting the congregation before Mass, collecting the offering and distributing bulletins as well as meeting emergency needs which arise at Mass. Ushers are scheduled one month on, one month off, and are trained by the head usher. |
